Cavities are one of the most common health issues in the world, and it’s estimated that 90% of adults in the US have experienced tooth decay at some point in their lives. However, just because they’re so common doesn’t mean they aren’t a big deal; in fact, without proper dental intervention, even a hidden cavity can cause a laundry list of serious health issues. This means that cavities that form in small places, like between the teeth, can be extra troublesome. Here’s what you need to know.

How Do Cavities Form?

Cavities happen as a result of unchecked tooth decay; they’re formed when acids produced by harmful bacteria remain in the mouth and erode a tooth’s enamel, which is the hard, outermost layer responsible for protecting it. This erosion causes tiny openings, and open the enamel is fully worn away, the next layer of your tooth, called dentin, is vulnerable. From there, things can continue to spread until the infection reaches the pulp, or center, of the tooth. Once this happens, without professional intervention, the tooth could be permanently lost. Cavities can affect any tooth inside the mouth and can form on any part of a tooth’s surface.

How Do I Know If I Have a Cavity Between My Teeth?

There are many signs of a cavity, which can vary depending on where it’s located and how much it’s progressed. However, it’s also possible for there to be no obvious symptoms whatsoever, especially during the cavity’s early stages or if it’s in a hidden space. As the issue worsens, you may notice the following:

  • Tooth pain that occurs without any apparent cause
  • Tooth sensitivity, especially when eating or drinking hot/cold items
  • Visible holes or pits in your teeth
  • Brown, black, or white staining on any surface of a tooth
  • Pain when you bite down or chew

Helpful Cavity Prevention Tips

Luckily, you have a lot of control when it comes to preventing cavities. Consider these tips:

  • Maintain excellent dental hygiene by brushing and flossing every single day.
  • Continue visiting your dentist semiannually for routine checkups and cleanings.
  • Be mindful of your diet and consume fewer sugary foods and beverages.
  • Avoid unhealthy habits like smoking or using tobacco. Likewise, using your teeth as tools or biting hard objects can damage your enamel, making your teeth more vulnerable to decay.

An unseen cavity is the most problematic! It’s in your best interest to prevent them as much as possible, but if you suspect one has formed between your teeth, don’t panic; your dentist will be able to help.
